DrAlienSmith Gravity Contact Microphone
DrAlienSmith Gravity Contact Microphone
The Gravity is our take on the contact microphone concept, a device that captures audio from vibrations contained in solid objects rather than sound that passes through air. By picking up these vibrations, the Gravity mic records unique and intimate perspectives on everything from acoustic instruments (like piano) to guitar amplifiers, sheet metal and anything else that has a flat surface and can vibrate. It's not always a sound that will replace a traditional mic set up but the Gravity will enhance your recordings with something unique.
While contact mics come in many forms, the most common ones have a restricted frequency response and can be low in level and high in noise. The Gravity mic blows those limitations away with a frequency response extending down past 50hz and up to 10khz while maintaining a low noise, high level microphone output.
So how does the Gravity mic achieve this? Instead of using piezo or geophone transducers, the Gravity utilizes the plate and coil design of a vibration speaker/transducer. This means that the mechanical energy from whatever the Gravity sits on is picked up by the plate and as it moves up and down, an alternating current is created in the coil. We then boost this signal with an output transformer so you can plug the Gravity into any mic preamp and hear the vibrations as sound.
Due to the nature of this design, the best sonic results come from the Gravity mic sitting on a flat horizontal surface. However, due to the grip of the two rubber coated feet, it can also work on surfaces angled up to 30 degrees.
The body of the Gravity mic, which houses the transducer, transformer and XLR connector, is made from strong and lightweight carbon fibre reinforced 3D printed plastic. It comes with its own hard case and a manual and has a 2 year ‘repair or replace’ warranty.
