Drawing inspiration from iconic models such as the RCA BA-11A and Gates SA-70, this preamp combines design elements from each into one ultimate creation. Packing a powerful punch but versatile enough to be used on a wide range of sound sources, the 40AM will help produce recordings that embody the warmth and character of a bygone era.
The 40AM Experience
While it is possible to drive into distortion by overloading the input or hitting maximum output headroom, the 40AM's true beauty lies in the subtle nuances available by adjusting any combination of its features. Whether you’re choosing between input transformer windings or utilizing the 5-position Response switch, you can easily tailor the sound of any source. With added features like a 20 dB pad, 85 Hz low cut filter, and a high impedance DI, the 40AM is an essential addition to your rack, allowing you to sculpt the sound you desire.

Transformers

Tubes
- Two octal 6SJ7 tubes (one used as pentode & one strapped as triode) amplify the signal with 52 dB of max gain
Response knob
A 5-position rotary switch allows the user to tailor overall tonal balance for any given source. This versatile 5-position Input Switch, allowing users to select their preferred input transformer winding configuration in both MIC and LINE modes. This influences the frequency response and the signal level sent to the first 6SJ7 tube. Both the (500Ω) MIC INPUT and (LOW) LINE INPUT configurations provide approximately 4.5 dB of additional gain.
A 5-position Response Switch gives you complete control over the frequency response and harmonic footprint of any material processed through the 40AM. Position 5 enhances high and low frequencies, delivering a rich sound while minimising distortion. Conversely, position 1 softens the highs and attenuates the lows, emphasising the mid-range and adding subtle harmonic character. For the most neutral sound, we suggest position 4 as a starting point. The Response switch allows you to tailor the sound to your taste.
Level Knob
The Level knob provides users with the flexibility to make precise signal level adjustments. It's important to note that it interacts slightly with the response knob based on its setting. As the signal is attenuated, users may notice a subtle darkening of the sound. However, by working in tandem with the response knob, adjustments can be made to compensate for any changes in tone.

When will my order be dispatched?

How long will it take for my order to be delivered?
Orders are usually delivered the day after they are shipped. Rural orders may take 1-2 extra days.
Why is my order taking longer than expected?
Sometimes we have to order stock in from our suppliers if we don’t have it on hand. Where there are delays or when products are on backorder, this will always be indicated on the product page.
How much is shipping?
Shipping is free within New Zealand and dispatched with Courier Post.
Can I pick up my order?
Orders are shipped from our warehouse. If you would like to pick your order up, please arrange with us prior to placing your order. Email nigel@oceania-audio.co.nz or contact us using the contact form on this website.
What if my order was wrong?
If your order was incorrect or faulty in any way, please let us know and we will make sure you get what you ordered.

NZ Delivery
We like to keep things simple... Shipping is always FREE within New Zealand.
Our shipping days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
All packages are sent out of Auckland, New Zealand.
Please allow up to 7 working days for your package to arrive before contacting us. Although we strive to have them arrive in 1-3 working days with rural, public holidays, weekends, or unforeseen circumstances, this can take longer, depending on the shipping option, location and payment option you chose.
Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive a confirmation email with tracking details.
Please note: orders containing personalised or customised items may require additional processing time. Any extended timeframes will be clearly communicated at checkout or in your order confirmation.

P.O. Boxes
We are currently unable to ship to P.O. Boxes. If a P.O. Box address is given by mistake we will contact you and this may cause a delay with the delivery of your package.
International Delivery
We don't currently ship outside of New Zealand, but if you aren't in New Zealand and see something you like, email sales@oceania-audio.co.nz and we will try to help you out.
